AbstractThis study attempts to analyze the problem of textile and clothing market liberalization in the EU markets. Over forty years, Europe has been restricting the access of its textile and clothing market to developing countries, whose exports were too competitive. In this paper, main concern will be given on the trade restrictions that have been applied by the Europ~an countries on China, which unlike other developing countries did not benefit from the GSP. After the end of the ATC, in January 2005, the European market was supposed to be completely liberalized, yet Europe soon used the WTO safeguard provision on China to reimpose quotas on Chinese exports. In order to understand the motivations of such a restrictive trade policy that is against the free trade commitments of EU, the author will try to present the stakes of the clothing and textile issue for the EU and of trade policies and assess the impact of the EU current trade policy. The recommendations will focus on how such problems linked to the trade policies can be avoided.
