Abstract | High accuracy and preclSlon are often required in nowadays numerically controlled machines. Among them, the multi-axis milling machines which possess the X- Y -Z linear and A-B rotary motions plays an important role in the manufacturing industry. Geometric, cutting force and thermal errors are three main sources of systematic error which affects the accuracy of CNC milling machines. This study presents a methodology to identify and compensate errors introduced due to elastic deformation in CNC milling machines. Under maximum speed and feed rate, the theoretically measured thrust and torque for given conditions is applied to identify the errors due to elastic deformation in machine structure using finite element modelling technique. Finite element model is developed based on the thrust force, material properties and operating conditions. The error compensation is based on software compensation technique with indirect measurement method or called 'self¬calibration' on coordinate measuring machine. One way to compensate the error is to make the coefficients in the polynomials approximating the rigid body errors to be dependant on the forces. However it requires real time determination of cutting force components in x, y and z directions |
