Abstract | Natural rubber latex has been researched as one of alternative materials for Selective Vacuum Manufacturing (SVM), a new rapid prototyping technique being developed at Asian Institute of Technology, as it is a renewable material that is non-toxic, inexpensive, environmentally friendly and abundantly available in Southeast Asia. The study focuses on the feasibility of fabricating the material using layered manufacturing process, material properties improvement and its color design. Fillers and pigments are investigated for these efforts. The rubber-retaining property and the prevention of latex infiltration into the support material were observed. Boundary conditions and surface appearance of final parts were examined. The results show that natural rubber latex is applicable to be used in color RP process as it can be fabricated layer by layer using cavity profile, shows good improvement when fillers are introduced as well as demonstrates a homogenous color when pigments are incorporated |
