Abstract | This thesis proposes and analyses a periodic review inventory system with two replenishment modes, i.e., regular mode and emergency mode. Regular order is placed periodically following order up-to level policy; and it arrives to stock after a deterministic lead-time. The location also has option of placing an emergency order, which is characterized by zero lead-time and higher acquisition costs in case of possible stockout. The emergency order is controlled by standard reorder point - order quantity policy (r, Q) . Thus, at some appropriate time in replenishment cycle, if the net inventory drops to a specific level, a possible emergency order is triggered. An approximate cost model, which includes holding cost, backordering cost and additional emergency cost, is developed. An algorithm, which is a modification of Hooke and Jeeves's algorithm, is proposed to search for optimal operation parameters. The numerical results show that the proposed system offers significant reduced cost in comparison to the system without an option of placing an emergency order |
