AbstractInternet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) or Next Generation network (NGN) is the protocol that has been designed to replace the existing Internet Protocol version 4. The IETF Next Generation Transition Working Group (NGTrans) has proposed many of transition mechanisms to integrate IPv6 into the cmrnnt infrastructure. The basic transition tools are dual stack host/router and tunneling. This research investigates the mutual impact of IPv4/IPv6 packet transmission between IPv4/IPv6 enable network (dual stack) and the existing IPv4-only network. The impacts between them are measured throughput degradation, end-to-end delay and packet loss rate. When TCP transport is used, the measured of mutual impact in performances of IPv4-native are better than those of the IPv6 dual stack network. The throughput degradation of IPv6 packet forwarding in dual stack is higher than IPv4, 12.58% and 5.15% respectively. In the other hand, end-to-end delay in IPv4/IPv6 dual stack is better than 1Pv4-native, 315% and 2783% but it may be unacceptable in some application. The packet loss rate is almost the same of 0.28% both in dual stack and IPv4-native.
