Abstract | A traffic sign recognition system for intelligent vehicles is developed in this thesis. This system has two parts. In the first part, shape detection method is implemented for detecting circular, triangular, square and octagonal signs efficiently and robustly. This method uses the symmetric nature of these shapes, together with the pattern of edge orientations exhibited by equiangular polygons with a known number of sides, to establish possible shape centroid locations in the image. This approach is invariant to in-plane rotation and returns the location and size of the shape detected. The result shows a detection rate of nearly 100%. In the second part, image moments and template matching algorithm are used to recognize the shape given in the first part, even in the case the image is rotated. The result shows a successful rate of over 85%. All those algorithms show that they are efficient enough for real-time application |
