AbstractThe specific objectives of this study are to analyze the present energy use and waste generation, and to identify opportunities for energy conservation and energy efficiency improvement in a Kraft pulp and paper mill. A kraft pulp and paper mill is audited in terms of energy supply and use during 2009 to 2011. The overall energy consumption is approximately 47 PJ which include 38 PJ of steam and 2.65 TWh of electricity in 2009. Overall energy consumption gradually increased in 2010 to 52 PJ including 41 PJ of steam and 2.9 TWh of electricity. The highest amount of energy consumed in 2011 is approximately 60 PJ including with 48 PJ of steam and 3.15 TWh of electricity. Based on benchmark value, baseline of energy consumption and the potential energy saving measures have identified. As the result, this study proposed to reduce consumption of steam, electricity and recover heat heat recovery. The energy saving potential based on internal and external benchmark comparison is estimated to be approximately 3.7 GJ/ADt. The improvement proposed based on immediate analysis for steam, heat recovery and electricity is approximately 14 TJ/year, 1.2 PJ/year and 46 TJ/year respectively.
