Abstract | Digital Subscriber Line (xDSL) is the access technology that uses digital modems at the user end and at the central office exchange connected through existing copper wires of the telephone. ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) is a member of Digital Subscriber Line (xDSL). It becomes more popular in many countries because it is capable to supply wide bandwidth (8 Mbit/s in ADSL and 20 Mbit/s in ADSL2) with existed copper telephone line. Ho Chi Minh City's Post and Telephone (HCM P&T) implements the ADSL project from July 2003 in Ho Chi Minh City. By the end of 2004, ADSL Network of HCM P&T has about 10,000 subscribers. The total Internet traffic volume is approximate 650 Mbit/s. (HCM P&T Source, 2005). The Internet traffic in ADSL network grows rapidly with the growing of the number of ADSL's subscriber. Thus Internet traffic measurement is impo1tant and indispensable for increasing capacity of this project. In this research study Internet traffic is measured at Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). Only rate measurement is possible. There are two categories measured following: DSLAM and subscribers. The subscribers are divided into tlU"ee sub- categoties: home, company, and Internet cafe. Internet traffic is analyzed on daily and hourly and weekly basis. Busy hour traffic is also analyzed. Besides, three sub-categories are compared. The results of this research study show that output stream (download h·affic) is always bigger than input stream (upload traffic) as expected. The observed busy hour concentration of individual subscriber was from 5% to nearly 50%. Among the cases of tlu·ee sub-categories Internet cafe has the biggest traffic volume but it has the smallest busy hour concentration. On the other hand, company subscriber has the smallest traffic value but it has the biggest busy hour concentration. |
