AbstractIn recent years, the effluent standard of nitrogen composed in industrial wastewater is more stringent. Conventional nitrogen removal processes are not sustainable due to high oxygen demand (high energy) and requirement of external carbon source (methanol) for denitrification. Anammox process has been developed to make nitrogen removal more sustainable by combination with partial nitrification process. The main improvements brought about by these processes are the decreased energy demand and carbon source requirement. In this study Anammox process was performed in gas-lift reactor to treat wastewater from surimi processing which contained high ammonium concentration. The operation of Anammox process in gas-lift reactor was divided into two phase, enrich Anammox biomass with synthetic wastewater and operation with effluent from activated sludge process with partial nitrification (AS/PN). Phase I, Anammox biomass was enriched for 88 days by using synthetic wastewater in 43.2 L gas-lift reactor and reached the nitrogen loading rate and nitrogen removal rate of 0.1733 kg N m-3 d-1 and 0.1698 kg N m-3 d-1 respectively. Phase II, Anammox process was operated for 32 days by using effluent from AS/PN process. Diluted effluent from AS/PN was fed to Anammox gas-lift reactor at the start-up and gradually increased amount of effluent from AS/PN to Anammox gas-lift reactor. The fluctuations of nitrogen concentration in effluent from AS/PN affect to Anammox process. The final nitrogen loading rate and nitrogen removal rate during operation in Anammox gas-lift reactor of 0.3018 kg N m-3 d-1 and 0.1725 kg N m-3 d-1 respectively. Approximately 57.16% of total nitrogen was removed in Anammox gas-lift reactor. This research provides a review of combined AS/PN-Anammox processes as well as estimates of the capital and operating costs of these processes for a medium sized seafood processing industry
