AbstractSliding mode control is appropriate to nonlinear system, such as pneumatic system, because of its property of robustness to system uncertainties and bounded external disturbances. However, a drawback that makes this control technique inapplicable is chattering phenomenon. Normally, a boundary layer is embedded to reduce chattering, but with the existence of boundary layer, there is a tradeoff between the smoothness of control signal, the tracking performance and the settling time of the controlled system. To compromise this tradeoff, a multimode PID-Sliding mode controller for position control of a pneumatic system is presented in this thesis. Multimode PID-Sliding mode control is designed to smooth out control signal and guarantee a good tracking performance of pneumatic system. In this thesis, a systematic design of sliding mode control is proposed. The way to identify system parameters and the structure of multimode PID-Sliding mode controller is explained. Multimode control strategy is investigated by simulation to verify its ability. After simulation, experimentally, multimode PID-Sliding mode control is implemented on a real pneumatic hardware that comprises of a rodless cylinder and a proportional valve to test its performance. The experiment results exhibits the effectiveness of multi mode controller in ensuring control quality
