Abstract | Reducing contamination is one of many key enablers to enhancing Hard Disk Drive (HOD) manufacturing yield and increasing profit margin. Thus, HDD manufacturers continue to respond by improving a cleaning solution and method for removing submicron particles from the surface or the underneath of the components used in the hard disk drive assembly manufacturing process such as the particles related from screw driving, bits and pieces of substance from part placement and, or an incoming foreign materials in cleanroom. A cleaning solution and apparatus for removing particulate contaminants from a HDD are disclosed. Whack And Purge machine (W AP) is using commercials in HDD manufacturing process. It is a cleaning station where installed prior HOD cover installation by purging strong airflow injected into the drive during motor spinning, also apply a mechanical shock to the drive to lose particles inside the drive and then force them out with a certain volume of airflow. To understand the origin of WAP cleaning operation and to improve the assembly method the tester set up is built. The Air Particle Counters (APCs) is installed, a sampling probe is connected in the cavity of WAP chamber to measure the particulates that are being removed during W AP operation, the relationship among flow rates, shock magnitude, Medias spinning and particle removal rate has been experimentally investigated in the APCs determine cleanliness of drives being assembled . We measured temporal variations of particle concentration during the operation of the W AP by experiments. Considering the decay rate and the percent cleanup of particle concentration in WAP, we observed the case of In-line balance air ionizer (BAI) additional to be the best design of W AP effectiveness carried out the particle removal in the HDD components. |
