AbstractIn this research, a multi-product multi-period two-echelon capacitated facility location problem is examined. The problem is to determine the plants and distribution centers which should be opened, the locations for each of them, the time periods to open them, the amount of products shipped from plants to distribution centers and from distribution centers to retailers, and the amount of products produced at each plants in each time period in order to satisfy demands from customers. The objective is to minimize the total cost which consists of the costs to open plants and distribution centers, the production cost, the transportation costs to transport products from plants to distribution centers and from distribution centers to retailers, and the inventory costs at plants, distribution centers and retailers. To do all of the above, a mixed integer programming problem is formulated. A Lagrangian relaxation procedure is also developed to solve the problem. Numerical results are shown to illustrate the performance of the Lagrangian procedure
