AbstractThe study discusses the impacts of an agroforestry project in homesteads on gender relations among women-only members of a Project Group. The research revealed that new agroforestry practices were not effectively employed in the first place and traditional cultivation practices remained. While women were more active in the project, decision making on land use was still controlled by husbands and fathers-in-law. Women's workloads increased as a result of the project and there did not seem to be a joint sharing of productive and reproductive responsibilities. Gender issues in the project were confined to awareness raising on domestic violence and did not integrate gender issues of disproportionate access and control to resources, thus resulting in a high participation of women in project activities but without commensurate advances into their social empowerment. The study demonstrates that while natural resource management projects just like the agroforestry project in this study may consider gender issues, these are narrowly applied to their daily livelihoods and household relations in decision making
