Abstract | Radio Frequency (RF) MEMS devices have a broad range of potential applications in military and commercial wifeless communication, navigation and sensor systems. This thesis implements a Transmitter-Receiver, universally called a 'Transceiver', with a working frequency of 1.8 GHz. The purpose of this study is to move closer towards thc goal of fabricating a complete transceiver on a single chip. The antenna and switch arc designed using MEMS; the transceiver circuit is designed with bipolar technology, which includes all basic modules such as Radio Frequency Amplifiers, Mixers, and Intermediate Frequency Amplifiers in both the transmitter and receiver paths. Each individual circuit was designed for achieving the best performance at a supply voltage of 2 V and obtaining a broadband RF frequency covering 1-1OGHz and a wide IF bandwidth of up to 1000 MHz. Finally, a detailed study is made on the different possible ways of fabricating the MEMS module and the CMOS together on a single wafer. Techniques such as sacrificial polysilicon surface micromachining, micromechanical system-on-chip; component challenges; design and packaging considerations are also discussed |
