Abstract | The study examined the challenges of women street vendors in Dhaka city since street vending is a male dominated work. The present study considers food and nonfood items and 120 women vendors and 120 men vendors as respondents. Study investigates that women street vendors are increasing in numbers and some factors resembling negative experience in former jobs, lack of knowledge and skill, lack of education, lack of financial support etc. push them to do street vending. Study shows that there is an earning gap between men and women vendors and some reasons behind this like less access to credit, less mobility of women vendors and less bargaining power etc. The women vendors face sexual harassment in different spheres of their surroundings. The women street vendors are influenced by the cultural constraints. Women street vendors have to face work family conflict. The present study shows that women vendors face more challenges than men vendors and they are marginalized sometimes because of being women and sometimes because of being women vendors. And they are not empowered, as they don't have decisionmaking power in their household though they contribute to their household economy. They present study has provided some recommendations to support the women vendors |
