AbstractThis study examines popular notions on women's participation in political life in Vietnam referring women's share of seats in National Assembly and their representation in decision-making structures of state apparatus. It presents a picture of the specific details on gender roles in politics in Vietnam, and the explanatory identifies the reasons of such relationships. While assessing levels of women's representation within the system, the analysis was deepened by interviewing stakeholders of the National Committee for advancement of women and survey of workers' opinions on women representing them in governance. The study shows that gender is an ever-present organizing factor in politics. Explicit gender norms, implicit political ideology, and the structure of the state itself all gender politics `male'. Thus, though Vietnamese women are guaranteed the equal political rights, their interests are articulated in relatively peripheral parts of the state apparatus
