AbstractThe distribution of time headway of general vehicles (all vehicles) on a single lane traffic stream has long been a subject of study. The prime interest in this distribution follows from its applications to capacity estimation and safety analysis. In addition, it can be used to realistically generate vehicles in microscopic simulation models. This thesis has further attempted to examine another type of headway, the headway of some sample vehicles (i.e., probe) on both single and multiple lane traffic stream. This kind of distribution is useful for ITS systems such as incident detection where real-time traffic data from probe vehicles are available. The study has been divided into two main parts; real world part which concerned with urban freeway US-290 in Houston, Texas, and simulation part. Shifted Negative Exponential (SNE) was found to give a close fit to the observed probe headway distribution. The distribution of probe's headway was found not necessary to follow the same distribution as in general vehicle's headway but it depends on many variables, i.e., mean and standard deviation of general vehicle headway, market penetration of probes, and number of lane. However, if the general vehicle's headway follows SNE, the probe's headway will also follows SNE. This result was also supported by statistical derivation viewpoint.
