AbstractVoice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is seen as one of the most important technologies for telecommunication providers due to its low costs. The formidable competition among telecommunications service providers in Vietnam for providing cheaper services have led to the widely use of VoIP. This research studies the behaviors of VoIP traffic and compares it with PSTN long distance traffic by measuring and analyzing them simultaneously in an environment of fixed circuit switch in HCMC. Statistical analyses including traffic profiles, calling rate profiles, and conversation time distributions were performed. Success ratio, percentage of reasons of failed calls, and repeated attempts were also investigated by observing originating calls of subscribers. The results of traffic measurements show that VoIP traffic, and also VoIP calls are nearly double that of PSTN long distance service. The mean conversation time of VoIP calls is 37% longer than that of PSTN long distance calls. VoIP is used more by residential subscribers, VoIP traffic of each private subscriber is 10 mErl whereas it is only 2.8 mErl per business subscriber. Repeated attempts of unsuccessful calls occur more frequently in VoIP than in PSTN long distance. While there is 26% of VoIP failed calls try again, it is only 16% in PSTN long distance. Explanation for this is likely in the lower charge rate of VoIP calls and the less reliable of VoIP network.
