AbstractThis thesis addresses an important issue of developing a radio aware routing metric for WLAN mesh networks which improves the performance in throughput and route stability. In this work, the dynamic and varying channel conditions that lead to poor performance in multihop routing are taken as the baseline case. To cope with aggregate effects of interference and time varying channel conditions, we propose a new baseline metric. A cross-layer routing approach that supports optimization across lower layers is used to incorporate this metric into an AODV based network layer protocol. The new metric is based on the concept of frame error rate (FER) and it effectively takes the interference and physical layer framing structure into account in the process of analyzing link quality. An extension of the path metric to be used in multi-radio environment is also proposed using the principle of channel diversity. The performance is evaluated by simulation and analysis under an 802.1 lb based single radio environment. We show that our baseline metric performs better in throughput and route stability than the mostly cited baseline metric - ETX. We also demonstrate that the link quality awareness is an important aspect in solving the problem of network throughput by comparing ETX and FER based routing with traditional minimum-hop count based routing. Moreover, the improvement in network throughput with FER is shown to be more pronounced at larger multi-hop path lengths
