AbstractThe use of multiple antenna arrays at transmitter and receiver by forming multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna channels in future wireless communication systems will be very common. The academic interest in space-time coding and MIMO systems has increased for the last few years. In this thesis, a general precoding scheme which enhances the performance of a MIMMO system which space time coded is presented. Three scenarios are investigated as space time trellis coded (STTC) system with uncorrelated Rayleigh channel, space time block coded (STBC) correlated Rayleigh channel and for STBC scheme with keyhole environment. An upper bound for the pairwise error probability (PEP) is derived and the precoding coefficients are obtained by minimizing the PEP upper bound. A diagonal precoder is assumed in the process of derivation for the first two cases and a general non diagonal precoder is obtained for keyhole environment. Simulations are carried out for the proposed three scenarios. In the case of diagonal precoders equal precoding coefficients give better error performance compared to unequal precoding coefficients. The major result obtained in our work is the design of a non diagonal precoder for STBC coded MIMO system in keyhole environment. Simulation results show the performance enhancement in bit error rate with the comparison to with and without precoders. Performance improvement of MB, 4dB can be obtained respectively for three and four transmit antenna cases at a bit error rate of 10-2 with two receive antennas in each scenario. A clear improvement in the bit error rate performance is observed with an increased number of transmit antennas
