Abstract | Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) is an endangered species existent in few places in the western, eastern and central parts of Bhutan. Phobjikha is a major wintering area with an average population of 215 cranes followed by Bumdeling with 158 cranes. The populations in Khotokha, Gyetsha and Thangbi are less than 20 with declining trends over the years. Some former wintering areas like Tshokhana and Samteygang in the west and Gongkhar in the central part of Bhutan are abandoned. One of the findings of the study states that the most critical threats responsible for the disappearance of cranes from the former wintering areas are still prevalent in the current wintering areas, with additional of many new threats . The loss and degradation of habitat is one of the main threats, where the wetlands have been extensively affected by developmental and agricultural activities and other factors. Protection of habitat is now considered the most important factor in protecting the species. The study also includes identification of migration routes and staging areas. Four migratory routes and six staging areas were confirmed, including the discovery of one new staging area at Tshokhana. The identified migratory routes are Gasa, Lhuntshi, Trashi Yangtshe and Paro routes which are used both for in-route and out-route migrations |
