AbstractRapid inflows are direct results of intense storms over the catchment or water releases of upstream reservoirs. The probable water quality implications are identified by analyzing the different mixing regimes due to rapid inflows. The experiments were designed to study mixing in a tank stratified in two layers perturbed by rapid inflows. The reservoir initial conditions such as effective gravity, stratification profile, were kept constant in each case. Dye visualization was used to identify the development of intrusion. A mixing parameterization is given for the mixing due to large rapid inflows. The mixing of the reservoir with different inflow volumes was investigated and the relation with Inflow Froude number was found. An overview on mixing in both the gravity current phase and layer thickening phase was made. The inflow Froude number of the reservoir and the degree of mixing in the reservoir has a good relationship. Higher values of Inflow Froude number (>0.3) indicate higher mixing of the reservoir in both the intermediate layer intrusion and bottom layer intrusion case. Since the Inflow Froude number of the reservoir governs the mixing it will affect the water quality of it. Reservoirs with low Inflow Froude numbers end up with a strongly stratified while reservoirs with high values of Inflow Froude numbers end up with well-mixed condition and poor water quality throughout the reservoir.
