AbstractA major portion of the fresh water supply for the city of Bangkok is obtained from the Chao Phraya River at the Sam Lae Pumping station, which is located 40 kilometers upstream from Bangkok. The Chao Phraya River, which supplies 3.6 million cubic meter per day water to the Sam Lae pumping station is polluted principally due to wastewater discharges along the nver. The MIKE 11 Hydro-dynamic, Advection-Dispersion and Water Quality models developed by the Danish Hydraulics Institute (DHI) was calibrated and verified using the data collected during low flow period (April-May) in the year 1998 and 1999 respectively at 22 Kilometers upstream of Sam Lae (Bangsai) and 20 Kilometers downstream of Sam Lae (Pak Kret) with the existing pumping rate of 42 m3 Is at Sam Lae pumping station. The calibrated and verified MIKE 11 model was applied to predict the water quality in the vicinity of Sam Lae pumping station in year 2005 with future pumping rate 60 m3 Is. A two-phase activated sludge wastewater treatment plant was considered in year 2010 and 2020. A wastewater management strategy was outlined to maintain future water quality in the vicinity of the Sam Lae pumping station.
