AbstractCracks and damages were discovered in pile cap of an elevated highway in Bangkok. The damages range from low to severe level. The damages are categorized into map cracking, crack with efflorescence, and large cracks more than 3 mm. These damages are suspected due to Alkali-Aggregate Reaction expansion. The integrity of the damaged pi le cap and its load carrying capacities become the major concern. The investigation is performed by conducting numerical analysis of the damaged pile cap. Degradation of pile cap stiffness is applied to add ress the damage. Three-dimensional fin ite element model is constructed in ABAQUS, commercial finite element program. The static linear analysis is performed. The analysis results are presented in term of bending moment and shear force in pile cap and pile reaction. The pile cap sti ll has sufficient load carrying capacity under service dead and live load. However, under ultimate load, the pile does not have sufficient load carrying capacity. Damaged pi le cap is unable to transfer the forces perfectly, thus, majority of force from column is transferred to the middle piles. This mechanism could increases middle pile reactions over pile capacity.
