AbstractEffect of woodfree recycled fiber on the properties of woodfree coated (WFC) paper had been studied. Handsheets were made from Acacia and woodfree DIP with different woodfree DIP content (100%, 50%, and 20%). Effect of filler and softwood addition as much as 15% on woodfree DIP furnishes was also studied. Paper properties of handsheets before and after coating were measured and compared to reference stock which made from 100% virgin fiber (90% Acacia and 10% softwood) with 15% filler. Results in this study show that paper properties of handsheets before and after coating have similar trend. Almost all strength, structural and optical properties became worse in the presence of woodfree DIP in fiber furnishes. Only opacity and tear strength were improved. Rough and porous surface of WFC paper which contained woodfree DIP gave higher ink absorption compared to reference stock. Addition of softwood improved strength properties of paper which contained woodfree DIP. Furthermore, brightness and smoothness were increased when filler was added to fiber furnishes. From the results, it can be concluded that up to 20% of this woodfree DIP in fiber furnish is acceptable to produce paper with similar properties as reference stock.
