AbstractBase paper properties have important role in the final properties of coated paper. The lower the coat weight is the more important the properties of base paper are. In this study, base paper made from different materials such as Acacia pulp, Eucalyptus pulp and Softwood pulp that were refined in the PFI mill with different number of revolutions. GCC was used as filler and C-PAM as the retention aid. Base paper absorbency varied with AKD and cationic starch varied. In order to find out the effect of furnish variation on base paper properties. Base paper was made from individual pulp Acacia, Eucalyptus and Softwood pulp at different refining level, different from pulp proportion at the same refining level to study effect of refining and fiber fraction on base paper properties. Base paper was made from different filler content, retention aid content and sizing agent dose to study effect of unitized wet end chemicals on base paper properties. All base paper properties such as: strength properties, surface properties and optical properties were analyzed Investigating the effect of base paper properties on coated paper properties was carried out by coating all of handsheets with the same coating colour formulation, coating operation condition and coat weight, and then calendered at the same calendering condition. Finally, coated paper properties were tested according to standard methods. In this study, main purpose is investigating the effect of base paper properties as strength properties, optical properties, base paper formation, base paper roughness, base paper porosity and base paper absorbency on coated paper properties and on printability of coated paper. In addition, this study examined the effect of post-calendering on base paper properties that was performed by using different calendering operation condition such as: pressure and roll surface temperature. Printability of coated paper was measured by testing dry pick strength, ink absorption and printing gloss and then analyzed the effect of base paper and coated paper properties on printability.
