AbstractThis thesis investigates the use of block codes for data transmissions via dimmable light, where the illumination level is proportional to the average Hamming weight of the code. The exhaustive search method for construction of such block codes has complex encoding and decoding implementation, while the systematic and efficient construction of block codes that offers dimming flexibility for data transmissions has not been investigated. Different schemes to achieve a range of average Hamming weights for the code are studied. The performance of block codes under these schemes are compared in terms of dimming flexibility, bit rate and implementation complexity. Among the investigated schemes, our proposed modification of cyclic coding that trades off bit rate and illumination range is able to offer dimming flexibility while providing simplicity in encoding and decoding implementations.
