Abstract | The motorcycle usage in Thailand is considered as a primary mode of transportation in both of urban and rural areas, and which has continually increased due to its low cost, great maneuverability in congested traffic and lower fuel consumption when compared to other vehicles. As the number of motorcycle users is increasing, the severities which are fatal injmy, serious injmy and slight injury of motorcycle riders and pillions are increasing as well, and this became a major health problem. Therefore, an evaluation of the severity on motorcycle accident must be stated in this study in order to determine factors affecting the motorcycle accident severity. Accident data from eight police stations in four representative of Thailand were collected for analysis. Logit Regression and Ordered Logit Regression Model were used in analyzing the significantly influential factors for the fatal crash and accident severity of motorcycle. The statistical tests showed following results as below. For the result of motorcycle fatal crash, the side sweep pattern is significant to results of the study, but it shows an indirect effect on the analysis this implies that other types of patterns have a direct effect on the fatality in motorcycle crash. The Excessive speed problem leads to fatal injury in road traffic accident around the world. It is concluded that when using high speed on driving motorcycle, the risk of fatal accident get increasing. Although the brand of motorcycle Honda has significant, it maybe mean that this brand is famous used when compared to other vehicles as same as other motorcycle brands. Even though the male motorcyclist has a better decision making of driving than female, the fatal rate in crash is higher than female due to a majority of motorcyclists are gender of male. For the first pillion fatal crash analysis results that the occurrence of motorcycle accident on Highway and Rural highway do not generate fatal crash among motorcycle passengers meanwhile the occurrence of motorcycle accident on Highway affects to fatal injury among motorcycle riders. The six lane road shows an entire positive sign of coefficient so to interpret this result, the motorcycle accidents occurring on this road have high rate of death injury. Asphalt and concrete pavement have inverse effect on the fatal accident among the first pillions while the asphalt pavement has a direct effect on the fatality in motorcyclists. Riding motorcycle along the road with wet condition is well known that this condition of road surface generates many road accidents because a friction of roads is decreased then the number of fatal crashes get higher. The age interval factor, the group of motorcyclists who age >60 years old are found that they higher risk in the motorcycle fatal crash than others. In the motorcycle accident severity, the collision pattern of rare end increases the severity level directly. The accident causation of excessive speed and cut in front appear to have direct effect to severity of this accident. As a consequence, a high level of injmy severity in crash due to ride motorcycles along the road with excessive speed as well as riding cut in front other vehicle causing traffic accident. Even though the brand of motorcycle Honda has significant, but this was caused by the same reason as the previous result. The phenomenon of male cyclists and the first pillions affecting to accident severity level implies that both of male cyclists and passengers have higher severity level in motorcycle accident. The first pillion fatal crash analysis results that the occurrences of motorcycle accident on Soi or collector road generate high level of injury severity among motorcycle passengers. The two lanes road has a low severity of level injury crash severity. The concrete pavement has a direct effect on the injury severity in the first motorcycle passengers. Riding motorcycles along the roads with wet surface condition, cyclists should reduce speed in order to increase friction between tires and road surface, and avoid high level of severity of traffic accident. The group of motorcyclists who age >60 years old are also found that they higher risk in the severity level of motorcycle crash than others. |
