Abstract | In spite of rapid economic growth in the recent years, poverty situation in the rural area of Vietnam is still high; the gap of living standards between urban and rural areas also remains large. With the attempt to reduce this disparity, NGOs along with the government of Vietnam have been working and launching a wide range of socio-economic development programs throughout the country. The focus of this research is to evaluate the contribution of one local NGO involved in poverty reduction through the "Community Development for the Poor of the Mountainous Area" project implemented in Binh Thuan province, Vietnam. This project aimed to generate income and improve living standards of the poor people in this rural-mountainous area by promoting various economic development activities both in agricultural and nonagricultural sectors. In this research, primary data was collected from sampled households and key informants while secondary data was from the NGO and related departments and organizations of all levels. Research findings showed that beneficiaries were all satisfied with project activities and the performance of the local NGO. All implemented activities achieved the project objective in income generation for the poor and partially contributed to the poverty reduction program of the locality. Among different economic development activities promoted by the project, fish farming yielded highest profit, followed by pig raising and paddy cultivation. However, poor people were not much interested in fish farming because of high investment and high risk involvement. Rattan knitting was considered a secondary occupation for rural poor people to earn additional income besides their agricultural work. |
