Rural poverty alleviation through community forestry : a case study of Buriram Province in Thailand

AbstractThe aim of this study was to look at in what ways poverty alleviation through community forest resources and examines the impacts of community forests on poverty alleviation base on the two study sites of Buriram province, in the Lower Northeast Thailand. Moreover the two study areas are the poorest areas of Buriram province. This discus more on how the people settled around the community forest are utilizing the community forests products in different social class. The finding found that the poor are depending much on forests to support market oriented activities such as charcoal selling, and NTFPs selling. The middle class depend much on food products, water for agricultural activities, climber trees and grass more than timber and firewood, while the better off have varieties of sources of income. They do not depend much on forest products. The potential of the forest products can contribute to household's economy for many evident of community forests on the poverty alleviation because many poor lack better alternative helping to meet their subsistence and survival needs. Community forest support the poor able to increase their incomes through forest activities, but need to encouraging forms of forest dependence that forest users and management rights to local people have often improved access by the poor. The NTFPs are the most value in the market and contribute in household economy. The relationship between socio-economic characteristics of households and access to and income from common property resources is becoming a concern in issues of local people. This study tries to address this with field data survey of 118 households of the three villages from two community forests in Buriram province. The analysis of households benefits from community forest shows that the poor households are currently benefit more from community forest as the result shows in the La Hoc Krasang CF the income from CF contribution at 25.1 percent of the agricultural income, while in Gud Chin wetland CF the poor household have income from CF contribution 9.6 percent of the total agricultural income. This mean income from community forest directly associated with the poor household and other social class in the villages. However, the weaknesses of community forest management. The rules and regulations were control the members but could not control the outsider users. The study suggests that a number of ways in which community forest may help to address some of issues and become more effectively to improve a greater extent. in Gud Chin wetland CF in the process which need to be addressed inequity within forest users due to low participation of the poorer household in decision making and forest management.
