AbstractThe transportation system, in Khulna Metropolitan City (KMC), Bangladesh, requires significant improvement. Inadequate public transport service and lack of modern facilities for efficient movement of passenger have become a severe problem. The main purpose of this study is to observe the present bus service condition in KMC. At present, three types of bus services in KMC operated by the private operators. These are Ordinary private bus (OPB) is operated by Inter District Bus-Minibus Owner Association while Motor Bus Owner Association is responsible for Town service (TS) and Minibus services have no association. Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) is a regulatory body. BRTA is responsible for controlling and regulating road transport by executing motor vehicle acts, issuing route perm its and fixing rates and fares of buses and trucks. Other activities of BRTA are issuing driving li cense, fitness certificates, and registration certificates and driving Instructor's license. For study purpose, the route from Fultala Bus Stand to Rupsha Bus Stand and Sonadanga Bus Stand was selected. Bus operational characteristics were determined and public opinion towards bus service was carried out. The dominance of male over female respondents was clearly evident in all three types of bus services. The working groups which include non-government, businessmen and students, government employee are the major trip generator. Most of the users use the bus service daily or on every working day and travel several minutes. More than half of trip generator expressed their wailing time as "unsuitable". The largest category of users rated all bus services as "fair" but for tovvn services it was also focused as "very poor". The most of the minibus and ordinary bus users treated these service more convenience and comfortable than town services. But corresponding to bus fair, town service is little bit expansive than the others services. Seal availability on all bus services was repo1ted as to be seldom. The important attribute of the users were to use of new buses of new model with well developed facilities and the increase of 111inibus. Bus operational characteristics such as time headway, layover time, travel time and travel speed, passenger waiting time for different bus services were determined. The passengers waiting time for Mini bus service is greater than other two services. The travel time of ordinary bus services is lower than the other two services in peak period. From the findings of this study it is recommended that the number of buses should be increased and new buses of latest model must be provided. To reduce the inconsistency in travel time, bus priori ty such as separate bus lane should be provided. Safety of the users should be given consideration.
