AbstractThe objective of this study is to carry out an experiment program for the repair of crack of beams by using stitching technique. The main parameters to be investigated in this study are related to anchor bolts, namely diameter, edge distance, depth and spacing between anchors and number of stitches. An experimental program was formulated to investigate the flexural behavior of cracked reinforced concrete beam repaired by using stitching technique. Small-scale beam tests were conducted to examine the feasibility of the method in prevention of crack and to further identify factors affecting the structural behavior of the repaired beam. In the main test series, pre-cracked concrete beams were cast using crack inducer in order to induce the crack at the mid-span which is the position intended to perform stitching. Along the main tests, the appropriate distance from the member's edge of bolts which is a significant factor in anchorage were also examined in the shear resistance tests. The influence of number of stitches was investigated by testing beams with centre point. Altogether, ten beams were tested which included the testing of cracked beam without repair. The deflection and crack width of beams were observed and the results are discussed. Based on the results obtained in the study, it is found that the increased in load carrying capacity of repaired beams using stitching technique were found to be more or less insignificant. Numbers of crack increased along the span length toward the support in repaired beams whereas for beams without repair, the original crack propagated upward easily and fewer new crack were found, in other words, repaired beams showed many number of finer cracks compared with the control beam which indicated that the ductility of the repaired beam using stitching technique is improved. Beams repaired using both 2 and 3 stitches performed, under loading, more or less equivalent to the un-cracked beam which indicated that the repaired beam using stitching technique is satisfactory. The performance of beams repaired using 3 stitches were found to be slightly better than that of using 2 stitches. It is also found that the capacity of bolts in shear resistance tests agreed reasonable well with ACI recommended equations.
