AbstractThis study was conducted for the main objective to assess the water quality in Panglao Island, Bohol Province, Philippines, by using sampling kits and instruments. Also, the factors that influence water and sanitation as well as the awareness of local people in the study area were examined in this research. This research also presents the respondents profile and the present water and sanitation status in the study area. The main target for water quality assessment is to evaluate the quality of drinking water and to investigate the salinity problem of the groundwater resources in the study area. The selected parameters for this study are Turbidity, Calcium, Magnesium, Nitrate, Sulfate, Chloride and Coliform (E-Coli). The result shows that most of the wells are salty and contaminated with coliform bacteria. The water quality problem is more serious in Panglao than in Dauis Municipality. The water and sanitation index as well as the awareness index was calculated by using the aggregated weighted index based on the scores derived from questionnaires. Principal Component Analysis was used because some of the independent variables are correlated with each other and need to extract the main components from the selected independent variable lists. In this study, the purpose of using multiple lineal regression analysis is to discover the relationships between selected independent variables and the water and sanitation index, as well as awareness index in the study area. The selected independent variables of the awareness include some of the socio-demographic factors and economic factors. From the result of regression, it can be concluded that household monthly income significantly influence their awareness as well as water and sanitation. This study also includes some of the management options that are suitable for the study area. To improve water quality and sanitation, people awareness should be enhanced and hygienic latrines and substandard toilets should be improved to avoid groundwater contamination. Scarcity of drinking water source is another problem especially in Panglao Island and this problem can be abated by using low cost rainwater harvesting options.
