AbstractHigh rate of groundwater withdrawal, in different parts of Lower Central Plain of Thailand, has not only caused declination of groundwater level but also land subsidence and seawater intrusion into the fresh water aquifers. To cope with these rising problems and manage the freshwater aquifer, the pumpage and recharge should be balanced and recharge areas should be well protected. This can be achieved only through better understanding of the safe yield of the aquifer system and identifying the recharge area and its origin. Therefore, estimation of safe yield and recharge of the Bangkok aquifer system were set as objectives of this study. This study deals with the application of stable isotope analysis to identify the recharge for the Bangkok Aquifer system. The stable isotope analysis of groundwater samples is described by the equation: 8D = 6.280^18O - 8.04, which shows the effect from evaporation. For the estimation of safe yield of the aquifer, the pumpage and groundwater level data were used. The safe yield estimations were carried out in Pra Padaeng, Nakon Luang and Nontaburi Aquifer for 6 provinces: Bangkok, Nakon Pathom, Nontaburi, Pathumtani, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakon, by plotting the changing in groundwater level and pumpage with respect to time base on concept of overdraft method to get the value of pumpage when groundwater level suddenly change. The safe yield of Pra Padaeng, Nakon Luang, and Nontaburi Aquifer are equal to 95,774 m3/day, 219,850 m3/day, and 114,303 m3/day respectively. From the stable isotopic analysis it is concluded that the natural recharge of groundwater comes rainfall (affected from evaporation) in upper part of the Lower Central Plain of Thailand and there are some leakages in the Bangkok aquifer system.
