AbstractThe infrastructure requirements of modem international airports are complex and diversified. Electricity and chilled water supply are important infrastructural needs of airports and, therefore requires high degree of reliability. In a conventional chilled water system, each building will have its own chilled water generating system using electrical chillers. Electricity will be used for power and lighting as well as air-conditioning system. Conventional power plants are usually about 40% efficiency, i.e. 60% of the energy is lost to the environment. By capturing this waste heat and using it in a secondary process, efficiency of up to 70% can be achieved. In a Cogeneration plant, a gas turbine generates electrical power. The waste heat is then collected from the gas turbine exhaust and passed through absorption chillers where the secondary energy source, chilled water, is generated. This study focuses on the integrated utility service for the New Bangkok International Airport. The integrated utility service was investigated both in technical and economics aspects. The suitable technology for this airport was found to be 50,000 kW gas turbine combined cycle with 14,000 RT absorption chillers. From economic analysis, payback period is found about 10 year and the internal rate of return about 8%.
