AbstractIn 2nd and 3rd of May, the category 3 Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar and Ayeyarwaddy Division is the most severely affected area. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the operations of FBOs in disaster relief and recovery interventions. This study also highlights the economic impact of FBOs' relief and recovery programs. The field survey was conducted in Labutta Township in December 20 l 0, two and half years after Cyclone Nargis. Community observations, interviews, Focused group Discussions and questionnaire survey were done in selected communities to collect primary data. The research finding showed that FBOs' relief operations did not covered all affected population from targeted villages. Gradually, FBOs' relief and recovery programs met the needs of the affected communities through food and non-food items distributions. Regarding livelihood assistance, FBOs failed to facilitate the affected people to involve in planning and decision making. FBOs' livelihood support programs did not meet the needs of the affected communities. Many people received livelihood assistance from FBOs to restore their livelihood. However, many people still need more assistance to rebuild permanent housing, purchase equipment for fishing and agriculture.
