Abstract | Visualization and management of ontological knowledge in an organization composed of complex processes that go beyond consolidating data and using a graph for visualization. In general, it focuses on collecting, capturing, extracting and sharing knowledge using an ontology model. Knowledge workers spend a lot of time and resources on the processes to build a semantic web application. Additionally, most of the existing application development tools are available to support the knowledge management and visualization tasks separately. To overcome this limitation, this thesis proposes an integrated framework for visualization and management of the ontological knowledge-based system by developing a web application using a web generator framework as MVT (Model-View-Template) and connecting the API of the ontology management framework and SPARQL endpoint. Our framework namely VisualOntology is able to extract and transform the knowledge from the API to the visualization techniques for building a semantic web application as an easy task. Firstly, it retrieves the model knowledge from the organizational repository via the Ontology API. Secondly, VisualOntology allows knowledge workers to generate a semantic web application which provides the exploratory search as Faceted Search, and the explanatory result as Node-link and Timeline visualizations. Finally, end users can experience the semantic web application with interactive visualizations to find the information on their interest. The framework has been applied to model a case study of AIT research projects, which can demonstrate its practicality and effectiveness in managing and visualizing ontological knowledge of an organization. The conducted usability study also reveals that the VisualOntology Framework can easily generate a semantic web application which is convenient for users to find the information on-demand. |
