Abstract | This study is based on the case of Kachin Internally Displaced persons who have been forced to relocate due to In-awaddy Myitsone Dam construction project in Kachin State, Myanmar. More than 15,000 Kachin people are compelled to relocate from their land and that lead to damage their livelihoods. The study interviewed 300 women and men from 142 Households to analyze the problems that they face and the adjustments that they have done. The subsequent health problems from the combination of their adjustment to the change in environment, the challenges they faced, and the changes in lifestyle behaviors after displacement lead women and men to suffer increasingly from health problems and risks. Vulnerable groups, especially women, are more susceptible to the impacts of displacement regarding decreased income, deprived housing, violence, and limited access to health services or protective health actions regarding communicable diseases particularly TB, Malaria and IIlV/AIDS. Therefore long-te1m planned interventions that will protect the vulnerable women and men IDPs are needed to shield them from complex health problems, both practical gender needs (such as to support and improve the efficiency of women's and men's productive roles) and strategic gender needs (such as to improve gender equity) should be met. |
