Abstract | Nowadays most of libraries are hybrid digital libraries which store both physical and digital resources. The emerging of the Internet causes a challenging issue to the digital library. Information on the web is naturally distributed. Moreover, resources in digital and physical format are provided by distributed library over the web. Hence there is a main trouble in combining heterogeneous and distributed information called the interoperability problem. This thesis work introduces an ontology approach to provide mapping between metadata of each library. The main purpose of this work is to make an interoperability of distributed libraries including digital, conventional and hybrid digital library by using ontology based approach. Furthermore, the proposed approach is tested by implementing three distributed hybrid digital libraries as a demonstration system as practical usage of real world library. The result of implementation has shown that hybrid digital library can effectively handle resource in various format provided by individual library on distributed location. Moreover ontology approach helps to solve interoperation problem by constructing map between local and global metadata which can be understood by all library |
