Abstract | A probabilistic approach is applied to develop pavement deterioration models for the networklevel application in Thailand. Deterioration model is one of the most important components in the pavement maintenance management system. Prediction models are used in maintenance planning, scheduling and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA). A stationary Markov chain and a discrete-time semi-Markov process are used as the deterioration techniques. The Markov models are developed for the entire country, each region, and each group of pavement with the same traffic and percentage of heavy vehicles. The semi-Markov models are developed only for the entire country and each region due to data scarcity. In this research, the comparison shows that the Markov models are the best-fitted models comparing with the actual condition data collected by DOH and other developed models. The semi-Markov model gives a very low deterioration rate, which cannot be used in the maintenance planning. In addition, the pavement should be maintained at the appropriate intervention levels to yield the optimum use of resources in both network- and project-level management. Several case studies are presented in this research by using the application of the developed models and the concept of cost-effectiveness to perform LCCA. |
