AbstractAlthough, congestion problem can be released through many ways, providing efficient public transit service is considered as one of the best strategies. Chiang a central city located in northern part of Thailand is selected to be the case of study. In the municipality, main public transit is minibus operated as shared taxi service with no fixed route. Based on current minibus system, transit users are suffered from poor services, which make the public transit system declined. Five sub-terminals together with fixed route service and taxi service are proposed to serve as main public system in the municipality. In addition, bus routes and operation plans for fixed route minibus are designed using GIS application. Then, transportation demand model is developed to examine the effects of the proposed plan. Disaggregate demand model is employed to determine mode share of transportation system. As a result, benefits incident matrix (BIM) is introduced to clarify the effects of the changes With proposing transportation system in base year, the results show that travel speed is higher than present system. In addition, costs from transportation sector are reduced due to decreasing in both vehicle-kilometer and vehicle-hour travel. Therefore, proposed transit system is recommended to implement in Chiang Mai municipality.
