AbstractInternet has become one of the essential infrastructures of modem life. One of the rapidly increasing applications of internet technology is in teaching and learning. Popularity and extraordinary growth of the World Wide Web (WWW is a principal factor generating interest in online learning, which ranges from full fledged accredited degree courses delivered qn web to putting some course supplementary materials online. The objective of this study is to develop a model for the internet based support system for civil engineering post graduate level coursework. A pilot web site has been developed which incorporates most of the technology equivalence constructs of post graduate level coursework. These components can be classified into three major categories: first are those 'Specific to course material (syllabus, textbooks, instructor info, home works, grades etc.), second for static and real-time communication tools (e. g live chat, web board) and third are related to system security and maintenance. The template approach has been used to provide a consistent workspace and identical functionality for onscreen viewing, downloading, editing etc for all course components, which offers several benefits over other alternatives. The developer level testing, evaluation and security measures have been fully implemented. This study proves that the internet and web technology are ideal media and tools to enhance the effectiveness of engineering education at post graduate level.
