AbstractThis study examined the gender responsiveness of HIV I AIDS programmes and services in Gombe and identified barriers hindering women living with HIV I AIDS access to treatment care and support services. Gender responsiveness was assessed based on available guideline for integrating gender into HIV I AIDS programmes. Hence areas not addressed in accordance to the guide line were analysed and presented in the study. The study was conducted in Gombe, the capital of Gombe state in the north eastern part of Nigeria. Using a qualitative approach the study looked into the lives of women living with HIV I AIDS, their challenges, barriers and came up with suggestions for further programming. The main finding is that programmes targeting women have always treated them as a homogeneous entity, which is not the case. Women are heterogeneous, they all differ in their needs and want as regards their health and their daily lives The study recommends capacity building of service providers and communities on addressing the needs of PL WHA by implementing programmes based on individual needs.
