Abstract | In this research I explore how stateless women and men in the context of urban settlement where no assistance is available are vulnerable and what factors crosscut those vulnerabilities. Through in-depth interviews, this research brings out the vulnerabilities of the stateless Muslim Rohingya men and women which are crosscut by gender, nationality and age. The research found that the new environment gives room for the Rohingya women and men to practice their religion. Compared to the environment in Myanmar, women are also freer in terms of mobility and decision making. However, to what degree the Rohingya women can exercise their agency still depends on their marital status, whether they are single, married or widow, and the traditional norms and gendered ideology that govern their behavior. Reproductive tasks still hold women in the traditional role in the household and prevent women from earning income or becoming the breadwinner of the family even when there is a strong economic need. In terms of men, they also suffer from the ideology of being the only breadwinner of the family which is hard to fulfill in the hardship they face in being a stateless persons in Thailand. |
