AbstractThis study aims to analyze the changes in gender roles and relations due to relocation and the subsequent changes in income generating activities among the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, who are the Muslim minority group residing in the North Rakhine (former Arakan) State of Myanmar, and left Myanmar due to severe human rights violation. Despite living 20 years inside camps in Bangladesh, they are denied access to outside job market, which they avail nonetheless illegally. This study reveals that although the income generating activities have changed for both men and women since they arrived in Bangladesh, it has serious implications for women. It is observed that the basic reason is changing gender roles. These refugee women were mostly housewife in Myanmar, and in Bangladesh, they have taken over the role of breadwinner for their family due to either inadequate earnings by man or absence of man in the family. Gender division of labor is one of the key findings of the study. The reason of the division of labor is the embedded gendered norm. It is also observed that refugee women are engaged in income generating activities not by choice, but out of compulsion.
