Abstract | Ground improvement using stone columns were used for the construction of the tank foundations for the Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Complex, Jubail, Saudi Arabia in three different areas. This study uses a software DC-Vibro based on Priebe's Method and PLAXIS-2D finite element program and calibrated with the results of a full scale hydroload test to estimate the settlement of the tank foundations. The computed settlement was higher than the measured settlements which attributed the fact that during the installation of stone columns, rapid consolidation has already took place. This effect was not considered in the design. The measured settlements were found to vary from 20 to 40 mm. After using the finite element model to study the behavior of stone column, it was concluded that generally 60-70 percent of the settlement occurred immediately during the construction of tank foundation. The total anticipated settlement is usually dependent on the tank diameter, applied load and subsurface stratigraphy. The improvement of the cohesive soil is found to be higher than the improvement ratio for cohesionless soil based on the field hydro-test settlement data. The field measurements together with the analytical analysis as well as the numerical simulations of the tank foundation showed good agreement after adjusted parameters. |
