AbstractFractured granite basement reservoirs are of a particular interest in Vietnam. Exploration and production companies have successfully made commercial oil and gas discoveries in this complex reservoir type. For example, the Cuu Long basin in Southern offshore of Vietnam is where most of oil and gas fields are mainly producing from fractured granite basements. Fractured granite basement reservoirs have double porosity. Secondary (fracture) porosity in this rock is formed during fracturing and/or weathering. The resulting pore structure heterogeneity makes formation more difficult to evaluate than other type of reservoir. In addition, shale deposited in the fracture opening during water circulation, may affect interpretation results. In this research, plate tectonic activities in the SE Asia, Vietnam and Cuu Long basin are reviewed for understanding the formation of Tertiary basins. The model of Cuu Long basin evolution in geological age was studied to understand how a fractured granite basement rock becomes a potential reservoir and what typical characteristics of fractured granite basement rocks are. Oil and/or gas fields in naturally fractured reservoirs in the world were reviewed. A database of NFR was developed using ARCVIEW GIS software, which can be easily retrieved and updated in future. An approach of quicklook analysis for a fractured granite basement reservoir was proposed. Fractured basement and fractures are identified based on combination of Gamma Ray, Calliper, Neutron, Density, Resistivity, FMI, ect. Water saturation is determined by three methods such as Archie, Indonesia, Simandoux, and fracture porosity is calculated based on porosity partitioning coefficient which was re-derived from Tiad&Donaldson (2001) for hydrocarbon-bearing zone in case of fractured granite basement reservoirs. As a case of study, The Su Tu Den (Black Lion) field in Cuu Long basin was selected for the application. The two set of well logging data were analyzed to calculate fracture porosity and water saturation. Fracture permeability is also calculated based on FMI interpretations for both two wells. The advantages and limitations of the study and the forward plans for further work in this complex fractured granite basement type are also discussed.
