Abstract | This research presents Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm for solving cross-docking distribution network problem that includes time window constraints and the objective to minimize system's transportation costs and also penalty holding costs at cross-docking facilities in operational activities of shipment consolidation. The algorithm is based on the variant of PSO with multiple social learning terms called GLNPSO. The mathematical formulation of the problem is adapted from earlier work. In order to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is effective, the solution quality and time are compared with those obtained from commercial software package, LINGO. The test problems are randomly generated and they are classified into small, medium and large problem sizes. The results from the experiments revealed that the proposed approach gave consistent solutions and computing times that increase almost linearly with problem sizes. For small-sized problem, optimal or near optimal solutions are reached within very short times in a matter of seconds. It yielded the robust solutions with slightly longer computational times in minutes for medium-scale problem. For large-scale problems, the algorithm provided solutions with higher variation both in terms of solution quality and time. |
