AbstractElectricity of Vietnam (EVN) is currently in stage of single buyer in the process of power sector deregulation. Its implementation is expected to help EVN to ensure the power system operation with reliability and security. The first step of the market operation is accomplished using a security- constrained unit commitment to better meet the needs emerging from electricity deregulation. Hence, determination main features of unit commitment and design formula and structures for security constrained resource scheduling is an important task for power market deregulation process in Vietnam. This study has carried out analysis of unit commitment and impacts of contingencies in unit commitment results in the stage of single buyer power market in Vietnam. The general objective of the unit commitment problem is to minimize system total operating cost while satisfying all of the constraints so that a given security level can be met. This study examined four case studies corresponding to conditions and constraints affecting to input data such as load demand, capacity and availability of hydro power plants, etc. Then, the impacts of contingencies such as outage of generating units, tieline flow limit or increase of load demand to unit commitment results also are investigated with those four base cases
