Abstract | Globalization and internationalization are sweeping all over the world pulling every enterprise into this spiral trend. Large enough to be effective and small enough to be flexible, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam are struggling to join the internationalization, continuing to see through their objectives of making a significant contribution to the promotion of the nation's economic growth and to improve the quality of life. However, as the proverb goes "going alone on an adventure can be hazardous ", these enterprises require a great support from both government and promotion organizations. Measures to promote the growth of small and medium enterprises have been recognized as playing the key role in maintaining and leveraging the international competitiveness of SMEs. This study, therefore, provides an overall understanding of internationalization process of Vietnamese SMEs, identifying key challenges and barriers they are facing with so that eventually recommendations for better support from trade organizations are given. The results of the study show that the model of business-government towards partnership, specialized ( product associations with upstream versus downstream internationalization consideration for different industries are suggestions for enhancing the international competitiveness of SMEs and helping them have a stronger foothold in the foreign markets. |
